Weekly update: golf, "fringed" benefits, and project at random from With Strings Attached

The 24th annual Jack McElmurry/Jake Zappa Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday was a great success.

The weather was beautiful and all the golfers (36 foursomes, a full course) had a good time.

I helped with set up and brought Stevens to the banquet.  It was great to see some long-time friends.

The old guys: Nate, Phil, Stevens

Jack was a charter member of the club and an avid golfer. He came up with the idea of the golf outing that has become our signature fundraiser.  He passed away in 2003.  His widow and their four daughters and their families ...

Weekly update: cranes, spaghetti, estate sale, and a goal finished from With Strings Attached

Sign of spring:  cranes at Illinois Beach State Park.  They're camouflaged in the brown grass but their bugling gave them away.

I spoke to the driver of one of the trucks hauling rocks for the shoreline stabilization project. He said the quarry is in Waterloo, Wisconsin.  Rocks for inshore are trucked in. Rocks for the offshore reefs are trucked to the Port of Milwaukee and sent by barge, a trip that can take six hours.  Because the weather has been so mild they've been able to get weeks ahead of schedule.

Weekly update: fundraising, two flings, a flimsy, a finish, and flowers from With Strings Attached

The weather was perfect on  Friday for the 23rd annual Jack McElmurry Golf Tournament at Shepherd's Crook golf course in Zion.  That's our Rotary Club's big fundraiser.  With a nearly-full complement of 140 golfers and many Rotarians pitching in how could it not be a success?  Oh, and I did mention the weather?  (77 and full sunshine).

Registration was at 11, tee time at noon, dinner and raffles at 5, and it was over at 7:30.   It will be a while until the final results are calculated but the proceeds will be in the neighborhood of ...

Weekly update: spaghetti, some disassembly required + RSC green from With Strings Attached

This weekend was our Rotary spaghetti dinner.  We prepare and package meals and deliver them to the elderly, homebound, and community helpers -- 150 this year.

We used Memorial UMC's kitchen.    Chris and Lisa made the sauce on Thursday evening while Pamela and I began salad prep and cookie packaging.   Rotarians, Interactors (high school), and friends turned out on Saturday morning to assemble the meals (spaghetti and sauce, salad, a roll, and a cookie).  All delivered by noon!

Weekly update: a meetup, variable stars, and scrap sorting from With Strings Attached

Lizzy accompanied her husband to a conference in Chicago last week. She had a free day Thursday and came up for a visit.   We met on the Usenet newsgroup Rec.Crafts.Textiles.Quilting in the late 1990's. It was such fun to meet her in person!   We enjoyed lunch, a tour of Zion, and a nice walk at Illinois Beach State Park.

The weather on Friday was ideal for the 22nd Annual Jack McElmurry Golf Outing -- our Rotary Club's big fundraiser.

I bought $20 worth of tickets for the 50/25/25 raffle (50% to the club and ...

Weekly update: wildflowers, golf, and a wedding from With Strings Attached

The last week of summer has been sunny, warm, and dry.

Top center: closeup of goldenrod florets; middle center: liatris with a bumblebee; right center: aster; lower right: another aster.  Lower left:  thistledown!

Fringed gentian are blooming now.  Look closely at the petals to see the fringes.  What a beautiful color!

The 21st Annual Jack McElmurry Golf Outing was Friday.   We used to have the event in May when it was likely to be chilly. The pandemic pushed the 2020 outing to September.  The change worked well both years and we're going to stick with it.

We are 'major ...

Weekly update: wildflowers, new projects, and reading from With Strings Attached

Spring wildflowers on my walks this week:
(clockwise):  skunk cabbage leafed out (the flower is the purply-brown "horn"), violets, swamp buttercup, white trout lily (aka dogtooth violet -- "trout" because the leaves are mottled brown/green like a trout); bloodroot.

Saturday morning:   six of us from Illinois Beach Sunrise Rotary joined other District 6440 Rotarians at a warehouse in Northbrook. We sorted the shoes our clubs purchased through Operation Warm -- new sneakers for kids in our communities.  IBSR's share was 92 pairs that will be distributed through two local agencies.

Operation Warm also provides new winter coats for kids.  Our ...

Weekly update: Easter, stash report, a finish, RSC, OMG, and reading from With Strings Attached

Happy Easter!

It's been a busy week!

We are fully Pfizerized.  Our second vaccinations were at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.  We were fortunate that our appointments were convenient -- just three miles down Sheridan Road in Zion at CTCA.

Beautiful spring weather was a great opportunity for  visiting two forest preserves -- Rollins Savanna on Friday and Lyons Woods on Saturday.

The arch in this fallen oak (Rollins Savanna) looked like a portal. I didn't want to take any chances of what might happen if I went through it.

We saw a pair of cranes at Illinois Beach State ...

Weekly update: a wedding, a finish, and reading from With Strings Attached

The weather was glorious on Friday -- perfect for the 20th annual Illinois Beach Sunrise Rotary Golf Outing.  It was originally scheduled for May 19 but Illinois was still in shut-down and the golf course wasn't open.   The golf outing committee pivoted very successfully!  The format was changed to two tee times:  9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The banquet and silent auction were eliminated.  Instead morning golfers were offered donuts and coffee and afternoon golfers were offered sack lunches.  There were raffles for cash (50/25/25), a gas grill (donated, of course), and a gift-card-and-lottery-ticket combo.

The ...
